It was a good documentary. I begrudgingly watched it at my wifes insistance. I kept expecting to see Michael Moore pop up, but he didn't. Spike did a good job. Let's not forget however that early in the production of this film, Spike Lee was claiming that he believed our government BLEW UP the levees to intentionally eradicate the black poor. Obviously none of that was in his film, but I think he did himself a disservice and lost alot of otherwise warranted attention to his film by proclaiming his original theory publically. He is a super smart guy and makes great films, but gets too emotional and ruins his own reputation.

Huh?-->He is a super smart guy and makes great films, but gets too emotional and ruins his own reputation. Oh really?? Why wouldn't ANYone be emotional about this? AMericans down there were FORGOTTEN!!
What I don't get is how you 1. Say you only watched it at your wifes insistance? Why did she have to insist? Did'nt you want to know what really happened there? 2.What Spike believed is JUST what the residents believed why single the director of the film out? Explosions were heard according to them as well.I still ask the question of how come Micheal Moore was M.I.A if there was a time for him to make an appearance that was it.

Why did I begrudgingly watch it? Because I thought it was going to be filled with a bunch of anti-bush, anti-white propaganda. I WAS WRONG AND IT WAS AN EXCELLENT FILM. As far as getting too emotional, I wasn't refering to this film in particular. When Spike Lee goes on press junkets promoting ANY of his upcoming work, he invariably brings up a bunch of racist, political BLEEP that has nothing to do with his films. This turns some people off, and his work suffers for it. ONCE AGAIN mom, it was an excellent film and I will be watching part two tonight.

Spike Lee did not sugar coat anything went he put this documentary together. He showed us what the News didn't. He left it up to us to make our own judgements. The government let those people down and have not done enough to correct the situation down there. After seeing this film I think we need to change the face of government and give others a chance to make it better. Obviously the people in power have no idea how to run a country, let alone a disaster.

RJ-MD I completely agree!! Yet let a country OVERSEAS have disaster?? Our country is QUICK to send assistance abroad yet ignore the needs of our own & then the media refers to it's OWN citizens as refugees?!? It's DESPICABLE!!What did they all think this wouldn't get out?? The media is as flawed as the governments of this country yet of course we ALL know that.

A powerful documentary. I was impressed at how many different opinions were included. As for the differences between "When the Levees Broke" and "Fahrenheit" I think there are many. For one, Michael Moore natrrated and appeared on camera in his film. In "W.T.L.B." Spike Lee let the story be told by the people who lived it. I didn't get the impression that Spike Lee felt it was important to put himself at the center of his documentary film. ~ Fitz

I'm from the Mississippi Gulf Coast and am living in NoVA. First, I would like thank all the people of our country for the outpouring of love, support and donations that were sent to the south. Our American citizens did more than our so called government ever did. Next I would like to say that I made a point of watching both nights and I thought Spike Lee did an excellent job except for one point. He dedicated the film to New Orleans and all the people of the coastal states including Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, however, there was only 1 interview of someone from the Mississippi Gulf coast and no one from any of the other states. I understand that New Orleans suffered the most loss, but my hometown was ground zero for Katrina and we didn't get Red Cross in there for 3 weeks AFTER the storm hit. My grandmother's house which floated up the street to the gas station parking lot wasn't even removed until 2 months ago. I would really appreciate the media paying attention to the other victims of Katrina. Thanks for letting me vent.

Fitz I agree! To me? There's nothing no director could say that the people that went through they themselves couldn't cover.Take the woman Mrs.Phyllis Montana for instance her anger alone came across in the film as gut wrenching as well as her heart warming strength. She was seriously AWESOME!
Mz Scorpio considering how correct your post really is? Continue to vent! That is why When The Levees Broke means SO very much the people in the gulf coast hardly got the chance to.This is just where you come in. To cover the places Spike & the media did not.

I am a former New Orleans resident and still have family there. The real problem with New Orleans is the people there do not want to help themselves. They are so use to having hand outs that they cannot help themselves. I do not see where this is a goverment issue, a race issue, or a poverty issue it boils down to do something to help your self stop being a drain on the country get up and do something. This problem has been long and comming and now it is here. Lets do what we can to help out but lets see some effort from the people down there and this is not true for everyone in LA alot of people down there are really tring to get back on there feet but there are too many waiting for someone to come pick them up and put them on there feet. Wake up AMERICIA.

SlverDoor. If an underconstructed levee washed out everything you own & held dear to you. You're telling me you can be back on your feet in a matter of 12 months!? People there & most of the Gulf Coast had great jobs, degrees, college education,& some were also senior citizens with much less.SO it may in fact be easy for people like yourself to blog how they aren't doing enough to get on their feet. Yet our country that is incredibly arrogant & so quick to claim the title The Land of Opprotunity did VERY little to save the lives of it's citizens those 5days!!For people to now 12 months later call those that survived lazy or in Houston they're labeling some there bad tenants is horrendous. As a former New Orleans resident what exactly would you have done if this included you?? Place the blame where it belong the drainage is from UNjust wars & a AWFUL administration. The money blown on that could restored The Gulf Coast EASILY.

Why is everyone throwing a fit about the president when it comes to this. Him and the administration is partly to blame. But why not the mayors and governors down there. Seems to me they were sitting on their hands an awful lot too. But do they try and fix it, doesn't seem like it to me. Nope, they are to busy planning their speeches blaming the feds for a job they didn't do. If my place was wiped out due to hurricane, I'd be bunking it on so called Mayor Williams doorstep. But then he would probably be to busy planning this stupid stadium to care about the citizens of DC. As usual

Once again you are right wrightmommy, State Rights take precedence over Federal involvement.
It took Nagin and Blanco 5 days to stop fighting and ask for help.

PROUDMUM and others, when are you going to man up and stop being scared to say what you REALLY mean. You guys constantly refer to the victims of Katrina as CITIZENS or AMERICANS. Say what you really mean..THE BLACK PEOPLE in new orleans were ignored and treated badly by our government.

IF the FED government had done the jobs to begin with, meaning building levees that were going to actually work, then maybe we could lay more of the blame on the Mayor and Governor's doorstep. However, since they DID NOT build proper levees, and ignored REPEATED request from the governor and mayor to rectify these situations before a "Katrina" became reality, it seems only fair that we lay the majority of the blame right where it is....at the WHITE HOUSE doorstep. As for the person who thinks we should just pick ourselves up and fix this problem ourselves.....exactly what do you think we've been doing????? EVERY BIT OF HELP CAME FROM FAMILY MEMBERS OUTSIDE OF THE AREA WHO GOT HELP IN TO US!!!!! I would hate for my grandmother's fate to have been left in your hands. Oh, and by the way, I am a Black, college eduacated, woman from the gulf coast who pays taxes and expects here government (ALL BRANCHES) to do the jobs they were elected for. I do not deserve to be called a "refugee", OR accused of expecting a handout. I do expect a hand up!!!!!

Quit playin ExMPD!! LOL What channel were you on watching that destruction BET perhaps?? Blacks weren't the only ones mistreated down there & you KNOW IT! Don't go there. Yes of course Nagin & Blanco dropped the ball as far as evacuation was concerned yet the same crap could easily happen here not everyone here has cars either!! We have ridiculous traffic without chaos (did you even see downtown D.C. on 9/11 I DID) We are in NO way prepared if something like that occurs here!! Exodus would be just as chaotic now as it was then.TRUST ME. Since when was I ever afraid to speak da real up on here? I ain't the one you've got me mixed up with other sugarcoaters. C'mon now....

Thank you MdPrdMum, and you're correct, blacks were not the only race horribly affected by this tragedy..the entire HUMAN race has been torn apart by this. The south definitely has it's race issues, but the white people (wealthy or not) lost loved ones, property, and family memories that can never be replaced, just as the blacks, asians, and latinos lost theirs. I was always proud of my country until 8/29/05. It was then that the reality of the state of our government came into focus. Our president and his elected officials forgot the most important things of all FAMILY and HOME. They were so busy trying to fight a war we have no business being in, that we didn't have enough troops and resources to take care of our own. I will never be able to erase the nightmares from my heart, and I will never be able to forgive my government for abandoning us during the time of our greatest need. Color of skin is irrelevant. We will all hurt over this for years to come. Spiritually, emotionally, physically and economically.

You were proud of "your" country till 8/29/05. YEA RIGHT. The war that you have made clear you are so much against started before then. Doesn't sound like you have been proud of "your"country for a long time before then

Wrightmommy, I'm am perfectly capable of being proud of my country AND disagreeing with a war that I truly believe we should not be in. Oh, I'm sorry, you must have forgotten that it's my right as a US citizen to have an opinion and voice it as well! I am embarrassed by a government that goes to other countries and tells them they are doing things wrong and yet that same government can't and won't take care of it's own people....you can't possibly think it's ok to leave people stranded and helpless the way our government did.

Your'e right proudmom, I'll quit playing. I did see D.C. on 9/11. In fact I worked 76 hours straight. The few weeks after 9/11 made these crime emergencies look like a joke. We worked 12-16 hrs a day SEVEN days a week. God did being a cop in DC suck

Lets see if I can get the quote by the "mayor" of New Orleans right....
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin criticized efforts to redevelop the world trade center site when confronted in a TV interview about delays in rebuilding his city after Hurricane Katrina.During the interview a correspondent pointed out flood-damaged cars still on the streets of New Orleans' devastated Ninth Ward. Nagin replied "You guys in New York can't get a hole in the ground fixed, and its five years later. So lets be fair"

And you all keep trying to draw attention from the mayor by putting the blame on the feds. You are as bad as he is. Confronted with a problem, he brings up others difficulties. "A hole in the ground" is his words. What in the world. How can anyone be that stupid and insensitive. He was asked about flood damaged cars and this is what he brings up. But hey, lets all focus on the president.
