Seriously??? You must be kidding. It is a 45 day sentence, not the death penalty. What an idiot she is.

Paris Hilton is now part of a grass-roots campaign to keep her out of jail.

In a message that went up Monday on her MySpace page and reported in the New York Post, the hotel heiress writes (in her own spelling): "My friend Joshua started this petition, please help and sihn it. i LOVE YOU ALL!!!!!"

The petition, directed to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, asks that Hilton be pardoned from her sentence of 45 days in jail for violating the terms of her probation by driving with a suspended license. The punishment was handed down in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday. An appeal has been filed.

"I urge all fans and supporters and all that are outraged by injustice to sign this petition," writes Hilton.

Not that everyone is hopping the Hilton bandwagon – entirely.

One posting on Paris's page, from a "Raven," reads, "It's so frustrating to me when famous people get off lightly for crimes that a regular person would be held full responsibility for. I don't think she should get a full 45 days though. She didn't hurt anybody and she seems very sorry. I can see letting her go without jail time if she takes some kind of classes about alcohol abuse."

Someone who is a great booster of Hilton is her former publicist, Elliot Mintz, who was relieved of his duties after Hilton's sentence was rendered. (Mintz had wrongly informed Hilton of the status of her license, he admitted.)

Since the firing, emotions have cooled, and Mintz told PEOPLE on Monday that he planned to meet with Hilton over dinner. "We're going to talk the way intelligent folks speak to each other. Not on cell phones and blackberries," he said. "We are going to see where it takes us."

Sure enough, the duo were spotted Monday night Los Angeles riding a golf cart at Paramount Studio's New York lot, arriving for the Brent Shapiro Foundation for Drug Awareness celebration of its annual Sober Day.

Hilton's outing – which also included her 23-year-old sister Nicky and a small posse – was largely symbolic. The two sisters and Mintz left after just 25 minutes. On her way out, Hilton posed for a few photos with fans and signed several autographs.

Although many guests at the party were dismayed at the sentence Hilton received, one voiced agreement with her doing real time.

"I do think she should go to lockdown rehab – but not a nice one. I think it should be chosen by the judge," Tom Arnold told PEOPLE. "I've got some ideas – there's a place in Alabama that worked for Robert Downey Jr."

I want her out picking up garbage along the side of the road while it's raining. I want her to eat regular jail food, and use regular jail toilet paper.

I'm not surprised with this at all. Celebs generally have a sense of entitlement because they've been put on pedestals and are considered "special". So if you have that feeling of entitlement, then you would most likely believe yourself to be above all reproach and your would expect to be treated differently than the rest of the little people in the world.

As far as I'm concerned, just because you are a celebrity, make more money; have more fame etc - that doesn't make you above the law.

She's not special. If she committed a crime/violated a law, she needs to be held accountable. Ignorance is not an excuse---if that's the case, we'll have all kinds of lunatics out of jail.

It's very insulting when you have a celebrity that believes and fighting against going to jail for the same crime a common Jo would go to fail for. If she gets out of going to jail --- I would have to shout that’s not fair.

my2cents I agree with you, but Ms. Hilton thinks she's special and entitled. So in her opinion, she shouldn't be treated like you or me.

And I'm sure some of her "fans" will call/e-mail/petition the Gov for her because they 've been brainwashed into thinking Ms. Hilton is special and entitled and shouldn't be treated like the rest of us.

CC, they have a petition in CA asking the Governor to pardon her... PULLEEZZZZ, she broke the law and she needs to suffer the consequences. Martha Stewart didn't go crying like a baby, she took her punishment and has moved on with her life. Paris needs to grow up!!! At least now she will be living a REAL SIMPLE LIFE... Behind Bars!..LOl

And look at the role model she has. Her mothers attitude said it all. "Are you kidding me?? After all the money we spent??" Well maybe if you stopped spending all this money on trying to get your daughter out of things she is stupid enough to do over and over again, maybe she wouldn't be as horrible as she is. Maybe you should be teaching her how to take responsibility for her actions instead. I know she is no longer a child. But you are never to old to learn something from your mother.

I actually feel sorry for her because I truly believe that she has NO IDEA what she has done. Please tell me when does "your license has been suspended" turn into, "you can drive for work related activities". She doesn't work anywhere. I feel stupid writing it, so I know she should feel stupid giving that as an excuse. Those are the ones with all the money.... Shame, shame, shame.

I didn't even know you could get a pardon for something like this. I wonder if she will get out of going to jail, I hope not. This might be her first time in understanding that there are consequences for negative actions.

Newsbuggy, I don't think anyone can be that stupid! I think that dummy-dumb-dumb thing is an act that she uses to get away with a variety of things.

Shoot...if she's that stupid, she shouldn't be allowed to drive...I can see it now: "But I thought a STOP sign meant to stop talking to my friends. I didn't know it meant to stop the CAR!"

Glad I could make you laugh, Newsbuggy!

Seriously though, I have friends who 'act dumb' in order for people to do things for them. It's irritating but they do it and get away with it all the time.

I am a mom of 4 kids. My twin boys are 2.5, I have a boy who is 1.5 and a newborn baby girl. I started out my life in the DC area, attended PG County public schools (survived to talk about it) and Graduated from UMD with a BS in Nursing. I moved west for a quieter, safer life with my family and I do not regret the move, but I miss the hustle and bustle of DC life. Luckily it is only about 40 minutes from here to Gaithersburg...even though most DC people seem to think that WV is worlds away.
