FOR ALL THE MOMS I KNOW

We are sitting at lunch when my daughter casually mentions that she and
her
husband are thinking of "starting a family."

"We're taking a survey," she says, half-joking. "Do you think I should
have
a baby?"

"It will change your life," I say, carefully keeping my tone neutral.

"I know," she says, "no more sleeping in on weekends, no more
spontaneous
vacations.."

But that is not what I meant at all. I look at my daughter, trying to
decide
what to tell her. I want her to know what she will never learn in
childbirth
classes. I want to tell her that the physical wounds of child bearing
will
heal, but that becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound
so
raw that she will forever be vulnerable.

I consider warning her that she will never again read a newspaper
without
asking "What if that had been MY child?" That every plane crash, every
house
fire will haunt her.

I look at her carefully manicured nails and stylish suit and think that
no
matter how sophisticated she is, becoming a mother will reduce her to
the
primitive level of a bear protecting her cub.

That an urgent call of "Mom!" will cause her to drop a soufflé or her
best
crystal without a moment's hesitation.

I feel I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested
in
her career, she will be professionally derailed by motherhood.

She might arrange for childcare, but one day she will be going into an
important business meeting and she will think of her baby's sweet
smell. She
will have to use every ounce of her discipline to keep from running
home,
just to make sure her baby is all right.

However decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess
herself
constantly as a mother.

Looking at my attractive daughter, I want to assure her that eventually
she
will shed the pounds of pregnancy, but she will never feel the same
about
herself. That her life, now so important, will be of less value to her
once
she has a child. That she would give it up in a moment to save her
offspring, but will also begin to hope for more years -- not to
accomplish
her own dreams, but to watch her child accomplish theirs.

I hope she will understand why I can think rationally about most
issues, but
become temporarily insane when I discuss the threat of nuclear war to
my
children's future.

I want to describe to my daughter the exhilaration of seeing your child
learn to ride a bike. I want to capture for her the belly laugh of a
baby
who is touching the soft fur of a dog or a cat for the first time.

My daughter's quizzical look makes me realize that tears have formed in
my
eyes. "You'll never regret it," I finally say.

Then I reach across the table, squeeze my daughter's hand and offer a
silent
prayer for her, and for me, and for all of the mere mortal women who
stumble
their way into this most wonderful of callings.

This blessed gift from God . . . that of being a Mother.

Please share this with a Mom that you know or a future Mom you know.

YES MOTHERS ARE A BLESSING FROM GOD!! I love my mother very much like everybody else does. At least most of us love our mothers. I had a long talk with my mother last night and I had to warn her of the impending doom thats coming to America. And for years I have not told her these things because I wanted her to live a life free from worrying about and caring about the END TIME TRIBULATION OF THE SAINTS AND SINNERS!! (wink)!!

But only now; in the last year have I told her things. How we will be under martial law soon and how bad things will get!! And she believes everything that her oldest child is telling her. She knows that I read a whole lot and research a whole lot and was one of the few kids in my ghetto neighborhood that would go to the library occassionally and the bookmobile bus that would come to Stanton Road and Southeast Washington to bring us books!!

And she had 10 children and never looked like it!! And that is when women were real strong women in those days!! She would have a child and in 2 days she would either go back to work or act like she was just taking a day or 2 rest!!

And she popped 5 of them out in 5 straight years!! And she is not even Mexican!! The only ones I have seen that can do this are Mexican women!! And she is a light skinned black; as my grandmother was about 75% Irish. As my friends use to say to me growing up,"Who is that white lady that keeps coming to your house?" And I would say, "That is not a white lady!! Thats my grandmother!!" I hope my grandmother is in heaven!! SHE WAS JUST AS MUCH OF A BLESSING IN MY LIFE THAN MY MOTHER

What a beautiful story, thank you and happy Mother's Day to you as well///

While I was driving my 11 year old to school this morning we saw some ducks in the road with the babies behind what I assume to be the mother duck. She asked what would happen if she got out to touch one of them and I told her that the mother would probably attack her.. She said "Like you would if somebody tried to touch me"... I said absolutely that's my job... Then she said "well Mom like the duck's mother you do a good job"...

So I dropped her off at school, cried my eyes out, then went to work so proud... That's all I wanted for Mother's Day was a little appreciation--- I just got it a couple days early...

yeah she made my day without even knowing it, she's almost a teenager so I better take the compliments while I can get them, I'm sure in a few years I'll be the worse parent in the world.

Happy Mothers Day, everyone! If your babies are still little, or teenagers, just wait 'til they grow up, and whisper in your ear "Mom, you know what? You were right, all along." Samti, you have that to look forward to, after her teenage years.
And it'll be sooner than you think!

the funny thing is when I was growing up I thought my mother was the most uncool person that ever lived, now I call her everyday for advice... She always says no matter how old we get we are still her children and always will be. She's the first one that I call with anything that's going on in my life!!

Happy Mother's Day!!

I am a mom of 4 kids. My twin boys are 2.5, I have a boy who is 1.5 and a newborn baby girl. I started out my life in the DC area, attended PG County public schools (survived to talk about it) and Graduated from UMD with a BS in Nursing. I moved west for a quieter, safer life with my family and I do not regret the move, but I miss the hustle and bustle of DC life. Luckily it is only about 40 minutes from here to Gaithersburg...even though most DC people seem to think that WV is worlds away.
