Granted, it is never an ideal situation when a mother feels that she is better of without a baby or the baby is better off without her..but the surrounding states all have Safe Haven laws (a baby less than 48 hrs old can be left at a Firestation, Police station or hospital with no threat of legal repercussions) and they seem to work well.

It has to be better than leaving a baby at the front steps to someones house where who knows wht sort of freaks are inside.

The most recent baby was lucky to find a woman who got help...but that doesn't mean it always happens that way.

Lets get on the ball Fenty!!

I wondered the same thing, yes. I guess the past DC leadership thought if Maryland and Virginia had it, DC women could easily cross the borders with their unwanted babies.....?

I can't understand why women get pregnant knowing full well they can't support a child. While I am all for safe havens, I am more in favor of birth control.

Why are you getting on Fenty? He just got here. LoL He was probably unaware just like I was. I'm usually on top of DC laws. I'm pretty sure the Safe Haven law will change though.

While I do agree, somewhat, that "Safe Havens" serve their purpose, what has happened to responsibility? I blame both parents responsible for dropping trou and creating these seemingly unwanted children. So they can "safely" dispose of their, I guess it would be safe to call it ,"misconceptions" and in all probability continue to drop trou, and let society raise their mistakes. The safe haven concept is not totally bad, but it really gives too many people a dumping place for their idiocy and lack of accountability for their actions.

Starrman, drop the word "responsibility" from your vocabulary. I honestly don't think it exists any longer in this country. Having said that, I agree people should take responsibility for their actions. When it comes to a mother who cannot/does not want to care for her child, we have to think first about the child's welfare. DC needs to enact a bill similar to that of their neighbors and the sooner the better.

tcfmva, Sorry I keep thinking that a semblance of it remains somewhere. Definitely agree that DC needs to pass the law, for the sake of the kids. I don't mean the ones having them, I mean the babies.

Starrman, I do agree that the parents should take care of their responsibilities. We SHOULD NOT drop the word from our vocabulary we need to enforce it in our vocabulary. The blame is not with Fenty or with not having a bill, the responsibility is with the parents that breed unwanted children then crowd up an already overcrowded foster system. The law should be, if you make a baby, you need to take care of it. If you don't, you go to jail.

newsbuggy, sadly then there would be even MORE kids in jail, although I agree.

Starrman, its not just teens that are having unwanted babies, its grown folks as well. Instead of building a baseball stadium for a losing team, they should have built a treatment center for pregnant women that need the help. DC sure has its priorities right.

Starrman, I think you're absolutely right when you say there would be even MORE kids in jail. It sounds good to say that people should take "responsibility" for children they bring into this world, however, you can't make someone care for/love a child. Our jails are filled with children who were born and then unloved, abused, left to fend for themselves....

Newsbuggy, your idea of sending people to jail that don't care of their children sounds good, and I'd support something like that if it were a viable plan. I don't think this country has the resources to send each and every parent to jail who doesn't care for their child. Let's face it, the handful we hear about every week doesn't even began to scratch the surface.

tcfmva, that is an unfortunate truth in today's society and until we do something about it, it shall continue. What is also unfortunate is that Baseball and school athletic fields are more important issues in DC.

a safe haven law is not important enough for Fenty to deal with right now. there are more pressuring issues. like crime, schools, and terrorism safety. it is highly unlikely that they find the mother of this child. she wouldn,t have gave it away if she intended to let people know it was hers. so its basically like a safe haven. we will deal with this issue when the bigger fish are fried.

5000 abortions a week, if that was not enough now you want women to carry them to term and dump them on society and called the non-exsistent father qas the problem.

lets feel sorry for the killers

Male, I am not sure what you are trying to say here... Please rephrase your comment.

Maleshavinist, the purpose of safe havens is not to encourage pregnancy or carrying babies to full term so that they can burden society (Too many do that with or without such a law). It is to avoid having these "babies having babies" from giving birth then discarding the newborn into a wastebasket or dumpster like they are useless trash. That is why such a law only pertains to infants less than 48 hours old...after 48 hours, the mother probably can't hide the fact that she has given birth and so will not likely commit such a travesty. It does nothing to discourage irresponsible sexual behavior, it's intentions are good as it is heartbreaking to hear on the news that an infant was found dead discarded in a dumpster somewhere. Even with the law, there have been a few cases where a "mother" (using this term loosely) still dicarded her baby and in these cases there is no leniancy or excuses on why a young girl would resort to such an act as she had a humane option.

I am a mom of 4 kids. My twin boys are 2.5, I have a boy who is 1.5 and a newborn baby girl. I started out my life in the DC area, attended PG County public schools (survived to talk about it) and Graduated from UMD with a BS in Nursing. I moved west for a quieter, safer life with my family and I do not regret the move, but I miss the hustle and bustle of DC life. Luckily it is only about 40 minutes from here to Gaithersburg...even though most DC people seem to think that WV is worlds away.
